Body Without Building1 Corinthians 12:27

Seven Fence Posts Beyond the House

This message is for A believer looking across a property line needs settled belonging in Christ's larger body without being directed to join or visit anything.

Every evening Paul looked west from his porch and counted seven cedar posts before the wire turned north. Beyond them stood another man's field, then another road, then houses whose lights appeared at dusk.

He believed in the body of Christ. He simply could not point to where his place in it became visible. Over time, the property line began supplying a picture: here is my house, there are other people, and between us is wire.

One August evening his neighbor's truck stalled beyond the seventh post. Paul carried a battery pack across the field. They started the truck, talked ten minutes, and prayed for the neighbor's brother before Paul walked home.

The fence still marked the land. It had never marked the body.

This is your seventh post. A boundary can be real without being qualified to name your belonging.

Seven Fence Posts Beyond the House

Christ names the members

Paul writes, "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular" (1 Corinthians 12:27). The sentence does not begin with an address. It begins with Christ.

The written word names you as a member of His body, and the Holy Spirit makes that belonging present beyond what you can map. You are Christ's member now, not a spare person awaiting placement.

This is not a claim that visible relationships do not matter. Paul crossed the field because one person needed help. The point is structural: relationship can express belonging, but it does not manufacture the body.

You have a larger life in Christ than the fence line can display. Scripture says "members in particular," and the Holy Spirit refuses every general comfort that leaves you personally unnamed.

No recommendation follows. The article stands complete on this porch. Christ has not mislaid you.

Boundaries have limited authority

A fence decides where cattle graze and who repairs which post. Good boundaries tell the truth within their assignment. Trouble begins when a boundary speaks beyond it.

The seventh post cannot say outside. Neither can a calendar, membership list, or building map decide whether someone in Christ belongs to Christ's body.

The written word gives the Head authority to name His members, and the Holy Spirit silences every lesser line at the edge of its jurisdiction. You are inside Christ because you are in Christ.

This leaves room for honest circumstance. Paul may eat alone tonight. He may know fewer people than he wishes. Those facts can be named without promoting them into identity.

You have belonging that does not wait on visibility. Scripture establishes it, and the Holy Spirit settles it without requiring a future change as proof.

A member can be difficult to map

The body contains hidden work. Tendons do not announce themselves. Marrow does not stand where an eye can admire it. Visibility and reality are different measures.

You may not know how your membership connects across the larger body today. Not knowing the map does not revoke the fact.

The written word calls you a member in particular, and the Holy Spirit bears witness that you belong to Jesus. You are not made imaginary by an unmapped season.

Let the porch view remain what it is. Seven posts, one wire, several lights. None must disappear for truth to stand.

You have the Head who knows every member. Scripture locates the body in Christ, and the Holy Spirit holds you within His life today while the geography remains honestly unresolved.

The breakthrough

The porch reports distance accurately. It shows that the nearest light is beyond the field and that nobody is walking up the drive tonight. Do not quarrel with those facts. They are circumstances, and truth can afford them. Christ remains the Head here.

What the porch cannot report is covenant membership. It has no instrument for measuring union with Christ, no view into the life of the Spirit, and no authority to subtract a believer from the body.

The written word supplies what the porch cannot see, and the Holy Spirit makes that unseen fact firm under your feet. You are a particular member, not a vague possibility somewhere past the fence.

This is where resolve serves you. Do not resolve to become more visible. Resolve to stop asking geography for a spiritual verdict. The question has been sent to the proper authority, and Scripture has answered it.

You have enough truth for the evening. The Holy Spirit keeps belonging from depending on a visitor, a phone call, or a different view tomorrow. Nothing visible must arrive before the sentence is complete.

The distant houses may brighten and darken. The wire may need repair next spring. Christ remains the Head, and the body remains His. Your place rests in His knowing, not the porch's report.

The fence was built for land, not identity. It may keep doing its proper work.

The false assignment ends here. You are not beyond Christ's body, because His body is not measured from your porch.

The written word calls you a member, and the Holy Spirit makes the sentence personal: you are not outside.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Fence line, you mark the field, not the body; I am Christ's member and I am not outside. The written word names me in His body, and the Holy Spirit settles my place beyond this wire.
  2. Fear that an unmapped place means Christ has misplaced me, leave in the name of Jesus. Scripture calls me a member in particular, and the Holy Spirit evicts "spare" from my name.
  3. Lord Jesus, You are the Head who knows and holds Your whole body. Your written word locates me in You, Your Holy Spirit bears witness within me, and I receive belonging with open hands.
