The tarp came off it once, about two years back, because he was after a socket set and the case was in the way.
It is a black flight case with a scuffed corner and four latches, and it stood behind the chest freezer for eleven months before it went under the tarp. Inside there are cables coiled the proper way, over and under, the way a man coils cable when he fully intends to use it again. There is a roll of gaffer tape with about a third left on it. There is a torch with dead batteries, because he used to need one at twenty to seven on a Sunday, when the hall lights were still on the timer and he was the only living soul in the building.
He ran sound for eleven years. He knew every monitor mix in that room by name. He knew which of the two radio mics would drop out if you stood near the fire door, and he knew that the fellow who read the notices came in hot on the first syllable every single week, so his hand was already on the fader before the man opened his mouth. Nobody out in that room ever knew he was there. That was exactly the point, and it was also the thing he was quietly proudest of in his whole life.
He has not touched a fader in four years.
And here is the part he does not say out loud, because it sounds like self pity and he was not raised for that. He does not miss the room. He misses knowing what he was for. On a Tuesday afternoon, with the case under the tarp and the freezer humming away behind it, he cannot answer a plain question about his own life: the gift is still in his hands, and there is nothing on this earth that seems to need it.
That is your garage. And that is the question standing in it.

The rota never made the gift
Let me put a builder's word on this, because I think it is the word you actually need.
A rota is distribution. It is a good thing and a necessary thing, and I will not say a word against it, because somebody has to know who is on the desk at nine. But distribution is not manufacture. A rota never made a gift in its life. It only ever told a gift where to stand on a Sunday.
Which means the two losses you have been carrying are not the same loss. When the rota went, what you lost was a schedule. What you have been grieving is the gift. You have spent four years paying for the wrong one. The written word fastens the gift to grace, and the Holy Spirit separates it cleanly from the vanished schedule.
Read this slowly, and watch what it fastens the gift to.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.1 Peter 4:10
One to another.
Not one to a schedule. Not one to a slot on a printed sheet. Not one to a room with a start time and a car park. The unit that verse puts in your hands is a person, singular, and it is the smallest and the oldest unit there is.
Now the heavy part, plainly, because you have been carrying it on your own.
You were not doing a job at that desk. You were doing a thing you were made for, and you knew it. For eleven years you were the man who made other people audible. Every voice that carried across that room went through your hands first. Nobody saw you, and that never bothered you, because the invisible ones are the ones who know exactly what they are for. That is a rare and settled kind of joy, and I am not going to stand here and pretend you lost something small. The written word honors the gift without chaining it to one room, and the Holy Spirit holds the truth while the loss is named honestly.
Then it stopped. There was no ceremony and nobody to hand the case to, and four years went by.
Hear me on those four years. They are not a debt. Nobody in heaven has been keeping a ledger of the Sundays you did not serve, and if you have been keeping one yourself, put it down, because God never opened it. You did not fall away from usefulness. The place you used to be useful in went out of your life, and you have been waiting for another one to come and tell you what to do next. That is the most natural thing in the world, and it is also the reason the case is still under the tarp. Scripture names gifts as grace received, and the Holy Spirit evicts the ledger from your hands.
Two things are true, and both of them are yours today.
The first is that the gift did not lapse. What God gives is not a license with an expiry date printed on it, and He does not issue a gift for a season and then quietly draw it back when the venue changes. Paul says it flat out: the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. He gave, and He is not of two minds about it.
The second is more personal, and it is the one that has to land. That verse was not written about people in general. It says every man, and every man takes in a man in a garage on a Tuesday with a socket set in his hand. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the grace that verse calls manifold is not a warehouse somebody else holds the key to. Some of it is in your hands right now. The written word makes the gift personal, and the Holy Spirit makes its present possession settled.
You have not been useless. You have been unassigned. Those are two different words, and only one of them is true about you.
You have been waiting to be scheduled.
That is the whole of it, and it is not laziness and it is not drifting. It is a habit worn in over eleven years, when the question of what to do with your gift was answered for you on a printed sheet before you were awake. You never had to ask it. When the sheet stopped coming the question came back to you raw, and you have been standing in front of it ever since with a coil of cable in your hand. The written word returns the gift to one another, and the Holy Spirit returns your attention to the person already near.
So take the question back.
Nobody is going to schedule you. That is not a loss. It is simply the shape of the thing now, and the moment you stop waiting on the sheet you will find the work standing right beside you with its hands full.
There is a man on your street who cannot lift what he needs to lift. There is a woman in your family whose phone nobody answers. There is somebody at your work who is one bad week from going under and has told not a soul. Not one of them is on a rota. Every one of them is one another.
And let me nail this down. This is not a test you pass by producing usefulness, and God is not holding His pleasure back until your hours come up. You do not serve in order to prove that you believe. You serve because He made you useful first and then said so out loud in His Word. The proving was finished at the cross, and nobody since has reopened it.
The case in your garage is not a museum. It is a case.
Declare this over yourself
Say it out loud, standing over that page, with the name already written on it. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the gift in your hands was given to you personally and it does not need reissuing by anybody. Name the mountain before you say anything to it, because a mountain nobody names never gets spoken to, and yours is four years old: the belief that you were retired from usefulness the day the rota stopped. Then measure what it takes to speak to a thing that size. Jesus said a grain of mustard seed, which is a good deal less than you have been waiting to feel. So speak, out loud, over that page. The written word has already named the gift, the Holy Spirit carries the declaration, and what God does with the name remains His to decide.
- Hands, you are not retired, you are commissioned, and I say so in the name of Jesus. The written word fastens the gift to one another, and the Holy Spirit directs it toward this visible name rather than a schedule.
- Voice that says nobody needs me now, get out of this garage in the name of Jesus. Scripture says God's gifts are not withdrawn, and the Holy Spirit evicts the lie that a vanished rota retired these hands.
- Lord, You are the Giver of every good and perfect gift and You have not taken one of them back from me. Your written word calls me a steward, Your Holy Spirit guides my service, and I am useful today with this name on the page.
