At twelve forty-three, he warmed one tortilla over the smallest burner.
His work jacket hung over a chair. The apartment was quiet except for a refrigerator motor and traffic turning wet tires on the avenue. He placed the tortilla beneath a tea towel the way his mother had, keeping the heat in while he washed his hands.
When he lifted the cloth, steam rose. He remembered communion so suddenly that he sat down.
He missed the bread more than the sermon. He missed receiving something small enough for a palm and large enough to carry the words of Jesus. Three years had passed. Now the only bread in reach was round, warm, and made for supper.
His fingers touched the edge. "This cannot be the place," he thought. Then a second thought followed, quieter: "Why not?"
That midnight table is yours. Every doctrine does not need settlement before the real question can be named: can Christ’s remembrance meet you where you actually eat?
The night shift did not make you late to Jesus
Midnight has turned supper into breakfast and breakfast into whatever is warm. The tortilla under the towel is ordinary food waiting for a tired person.
Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). The center is Jesus giving Himself and calling His disciples to remember Him.
You are within Christ’s welcome at this midnight table. The written Word directs remembrance toward Him, and the Holy Spirit makes that address present after the shift. The hour does not place you outside His care.
Disputed communion practice remains unadjudicated. No other table is attacked and no new rule is established. The person who misses the bread and cup remains in view.
Hunger may speak without becoming judge
Missing communion is a real ache. It can also begin issuing verdicts: forgotten, late, outside, unqualified.
Those verdicts need the written Word, not the apartment clock.
You have an appetite turned toward Jesus, not proof that He has rejected you. The written Word says His body is given for you, and the Holy Spirit glorifies Christ through remembrance. Hunger may remain while condemnation loses its voice.
Santiago speaks with movement, but he does not rush the tired body. Sit. Drink water. Let the shift end.
Keep the practice open-handed
If receiving bread and cup at this table is a practice held in good conscience, let it be centered upon Jesus and gratitude. If uncertainty remains, pray and keep seeking truthful counsel.
You are in Christ before every practical question is resolved. The written Word establishes your standing in Him, and the Holy Spirit bears witness to belonging. No page, person, or tortilla manufactures that union.
There is no schedule here. Midnight does not become a required hour. The same tortilla tomorrow may simply be supper.
Freedom keeps remembrance from becoming another shift.
The apartment table does not need to imitate another room. It also does not need to be declared superior.
You have peace available in the place where you actually live. The written Word calls Christ’s peace to rule in the heart (Colossians 3:15), and the Holy Spirit bears peace as Her fruit. The room does not have to approve.
Eat slowly. Put the towel in the wash. Turn off the kitchen light.
The night shift will come again, but this moment owes tomorrow no repetition. Warm bread, honest remembrance, and rest can remain one gift under the sovereign care of God.
The body may need food before reflection. Eat first if hunger makes thought thin. Jesus fed people and did not treat bodily need as an interruption to ministry. You have permission to receive ordinary nourishment without making every bite explain itself. The written Word honors embodied care, and the Holy Spirit does not shame human limits.
After rest, a question may become clearer. Write it down in plain words: “What do I believe about this practice, and what does Scripture directly say?” That question can be carried to a trustworthy believer without surrendering conscience.
You have wisdom available without pretending certainty has already arrived. The written Word gives light for the path, and the Holy Spirit guides step by step. One open question does not place you outside Christ.
The apartment may hold other people with different convictions. Do not turn your hunger into pressure on them. Ask, listen, and honor consent. Love remains love when another person says not tonight.
You are free to keep Jesus central and another person’s will free. The written Word calls love patient and kind, and the Holy Spirit bears gentleness and self-control. Assurance about Christ never licenses control.
Fold the towel when it dries. The cloth has served warmth and can return to the drawer. In the same way, a practice may serve remembrance without becoming the master of the household. Christ alone keeps that place.
Rest now without reviewing the moment for spiritual quality. You have received grace in Christ before sleep arrives. The written Word says He gives rest to the weary, and the Holy Spirit remains present in the quiet apartment. Nothing more is owed tonight.
Declare this over yourself
- Night-shift table, you do not stand outside Christ's remembrance. The written Word says His body was given for me, and midnight cannot close what Jesus opened.
- Fear that this gift is not mine to receive, leave in the name of Jesus. Scripture says "for you," the Holy Spirit keeps Christ at the center, and grace does not become trespass in my hand.
- Lord Jesus, You are the Giver at this table now, and I receive remembrance with thanks. Holy Spirit, make the written Word living in me, because breaking this bread with my eyes on Christ is my next act.
